Moi's House Help Who Became A Law Maker
It is amazing how Moi's house help rose to become a law maker after years if serving the former president as his house help and a nanny to his kids. The former house help later rose to become Rongai Member of Parliament and her name is Alicen Chelaite.
She stated that when she moved in with the Moi's, Moi was working at a teacher at Kabarnet and his wife Lena Moi was also working as a teacher. She adds that her father being a friend of Moi,she had no worry moving in with the Moi and being a nanny to his two kids, Jonathan and Jeniffer.
"My father was a friend to the Moi’s, so that’s how I ended up moving to stay with the Moi family at their home. I used to take care of Jonathan and Jennifer.Lena respected me. We even used to share meals together and whenever she bought her children gifts, I would also receive something. The couple treated me like their daughter,"she states,adding that she moved in with the Moi's at the mere age if 13 years. She states that she had seen Moi ascend to power since his being a teacher at Kabarnet to his being elected to the LegCo. She says that work started accumulating as Moi started hosting visitors of high profile and she being mandated with serving them.
“I won Moi’s confidence that he trusted me with his visitors. The house was a hive of activities being the home of a prominent politician in Rift Valley,” sh states. She says that the Moi's were kind enough to see her through secondary school and later enrolling to a course still with the help if the Moi's.“Leaving the first family did not disconnect me from Moi and his wife. I would meet the children back home and even Moi would pass via the office. He remembered me and encouraged me to perform my roles diligently,” she continued.“He (Moi) encouraged me to be a servant of people, and through such, I decided to give a try in politics,” she recounts her journey.
“As a mayor and elected MP, I worked very closely with Moi. There are times he would organise meetings at State House where we could meet and share issues affecting the area, and instantly, he would come up with a solution,” she remarked. The lady later in 2007 took a resignation to focus her energy on farming.
