Meet Naima, the Lady who Conquered Heroin Addiction
Beauty Corner is a beauty Parlor located in Mombasa, run and owned by one NAIMA Said. Having been a heroin addict, Naima looked for an enroute to a heroin free life in a region where the drug usage is rampant.
Taking to doing make up for heroin addicts and ladies who want to quite the practice, Naima has been a blessing to many women who were hooked to the drug. She started her parlor back in 2019 in a bid to bring in women to access beneficial services like HIV testing, cervical cancer screening, methadone treatment and counseling.
It is located in Reachout Centre Trust. The manager of Reach out Center Trust one Faiza Hamid speaks on why it was vital to set up the parlour. “Female drug users have very specific needs,” explains Faiza, “And their needs aren’t being met.” women may in the present time still find difficulty in accessing drug rehabilitation centres as well as treatment hence this very important idea.
Many women who are hooked to the Heroin practices are forced to engage in prostitution as one dose of heroin range from Ksh 150 to 200 quite a high price for those who are unemployed. Naima having used heroin for ten years and now clean for a good five years set up the parlor to remind these women who are seen as outcasts of the community that they are still beautiful.
“I talk to these
girls. I say to them: ‘What you see on the outside is drug addiction and
self-loathing. You are beautiful. You’re a mother, a daughter, a sister.’ As I
paint their nails, I say, ‘why don’t you start methadone? Why don’t you check
your [HIV] status?’ When it works, it’s like magic," says Naima. She has
helped 453 women rediscover who they are and come out of heroin addiction. Heroin
in Mombasa is readily available in the streets hence making the fight against
it quite a task.
