How a Young Pig Farmer in Cape Town Is Making His Own Feeds to Cut On Cost
For quality pigs, I make own feeds
Thomas started commercial pig rearing some 6 years ago after being introduced by this close friend who has over 800 pigs, Thomas started with only 4 piglets. Today, Thomas, 37, besides having over 150 animals he also runs a successful pork outlet in town.
“Business is good and my biggest challenge is lack of enough space, I could keep over 300 pigs” Says the Business graduate.
While he accepts that he embarked on this pig business after he failed to secure a job, He quickly notes that starting pig farming remains the best choice ever.
“I spent a lot of time looking for a formal job”, if I knew I could have started this business earlier- He says that the challenge now is getting the right people who he can employ to help him run his business.
To help solve this big challenge, he has discovered a 7 days feeding formula for his pigs.
“I have designed several feeding boxes where I place my feeds that I usually come up with for my pigs that run a week”; this gives me time to run my pork selling business at my butchery.
Per day each pig consumes 2 kg of Feeds and this translates to approximately 300 Kg of feeds per day (2kg*150 pigs=300kg)
70 kg bag of pigs feeds retails at 24USD from most agro vets in town.
“The challenges I have noted over the years is that most commercial feeds are poorly made and of low quality-This affects your pigs growth and that’s why I prefer my own feeds where I am able to save 8 USD per bag”
Thomas has a feed mixer, cutting his production cost by 40 percent.
“I use 45 Kg wheat bran, 15 kg of soya, lysine, Digestible crude protein- (DCP) - i mix all this with 50 kg of maize germ. In this mix I add 200 g of salt that will help me make approximately 190 kg total feeds at the cost of 17USD per 70 kg bag “Thomas says, I learnt all this from other farmers.
Thomas says that due to lack of space, he does boars castration. “I opt to buy young piglets, rear them and sell when they mature. He notes that breeding sometimes take longer and so if I buy from other farmers, I can sell the mature pigs up to 4-5 times within one year.
He says that the young piglets should be clipped their teeth’s three days after birth this is to prevent injuries to their mother when suckling.
Thomas deworms his pigs every three months to keep away infections and he limits the number of visitors in his feeding area. He notes that African swine fever is very common and therefore if you have to allow visitors it is important to disinfect their foot wear.
A 55 kg pig is sold at 150Usd in a good season. He says that he is able to sell a minimum of 8 -10 pigs a month which allows him to have a stable income.” One kilo of pork meat retails at 4 USD.
