BBI Billions to Be Used To Fight against Coronavirus
The money allocated to the BBI process will be diverted to a newly created emergency fund meant to finance the country's fight against the coronavirus. The Nation reported its sources indicating that the decision was made after a meeting between President Uhuru Kenyatta and ODM Leader Raila Odinga who are the architects of the BBI initiative.
The BBI kitty had Sh11 billion which was to facilitate collection of views and finance rallies meant to popularize the initiative. The rallies have since been suspended and are unlikely to continue in the near future as the kitty will now be diverted to the Covid19 emergency fund.
The money is expected to assist the government manufacture face masks for mass distribution, as well as in building more ICU beds to enhance the country's capacity to fight coronavirus. President Kenyatta appointed Kenya Breweries Limited CEO Jane Karuku as the Chairperson of the board that will administer the fund.
Board members will include Michael Joseph,
James Mwangi, Narenda Raval, Joshua Oigara, Jeremy Awori, Wachira Waruru,
Mohammed Hersi, and Phyllis Wakiaga.
Decision made after Uhuru and Raila met to ensure that this deadly virus is kept away and managed well.
