Kenya as a country embraces education and has promoted education to be availed to all. Through the 8-4-4 education system children can reach the highest level of education, that is the university. There are several universities in Kenya both, public universities and private universities. To join either the Public university or private university a student has to have excelled in his or her K.C.S.E examination with a minimum grade of c+. Private universities found in Kenya include; Private universities with letters of interim Authority, Chartered and constituent colleges. Listed below are some of the universities.
1. Africa International University
This university formerly was known as Nairobi Evangelical Graduate school of Theology. It was established through a vision of Nigerian Dr. Byang Kato. At the time the late Dr. Byang Kato was the secretary to the Association of evangelism here in Africa.
2. Africa Nazarene
African Nazarene university is a Christian based university, it being founded by the international Nazarene church.it started in 1994 with Dr.Martha John as vice chancellor. It was founded and had 62 student from eleven different African countries who took courses in theology and courses in business administration. It later; that is one year after introduced a course in computer science which was taken by 42 undergraduates. Since then the university has grown tremendously.
3. Daystar University
The university was founded by Dr. S.E Motsoko Pheko who was a political refugee from South Africa and an American missionaries mrs Fayek and dr. Donald in 1964, Bulawayo in Zimbabwe. The name daystar was inspired by a description of Jesus Christ from the bible and a constant reminder every member in Daystar University is encourage to emulate his behavior and character. Since then the university grew and set root in Kenya offering various degree courses and producing some high class graduates.
4. Kenya Methodist University
KeMU is one of the private character universities. It was established by the Methodist church here in Kenya. It is in Meru a distance of five kilometers to Meru Town. It is in the north eastern side of the woodland slopes of Mount Kenya.
5. Great Lakes University of Kisumu
This university, established in1998 is based in the philosophy of self-propagated development. This is through the community’s participation. It was started to cope with challenges and contribute towards paradigm shift for achievement of long-lasting development at different level in Africa.
6. United States International University [USIU]
USIU recruits and admits quality students according to published standards which are determined by USIU leadership to keep up with its mission which is described in the university catalog.
The Kabarak University is located along Nakuru-Eldama Ravine highway 20kms from Nakuru town. The university is ideal for learning with over a thousand in the various courses offered. These courses include law ,theology ,engineering ,technology ,science and education. It has graduated over 2000 grandaunts.
This a non-profit making institution. It is found along the Nairobi-Thika super highway in Ruaraka. It was founded as an accounting college in 1989 by the Institute of certified Public Accountants of Kenya[ICPAK].This was due to a study that showed Kenya needed 400 accountants who are qualified each year due to the economy of Kenya.
9.Mount Kenya University
MKU is a private chartered university. It is among the largest private universities, being a multi-campus university. It was founded in 1996 as Thika Institute of Technology and has since grown to be among the best private universities in Kenya.
10.St. Pauls University
St. Pauls University is privately chartered based on Christian values. The main campus is located in Limuru and has other campuses in towns like Nairobi, Machakos, Nakuru and Butere.
11.Pan African Christian University
This university is Christian based and is located in Nairobi Kenya. It is privately chartered authorized by the Kenyan government to give undergraduate and graduate degree. It was started in 1978 by Pentecostal Assemblies of Canada.

This university was established in 1962 by the Africa Inland Mission. It is a Christian university privately chartered.

In order to attract students, private universities have been forced to reform. They really invest in advertising their courses nowadays than there before. They are majoring in improving their degree courses and also their diploma and certificate programs as they hope to attract students who didn’t meet the cut to join the public universities. This is due to the decline of performance by the students.
