I mean the deep meaningful communication with God and not just the “genie” prayers we are tempted to say when you are late for work and you hope not to run to your boss. Make a contentful prayer with all your focus and concentration. Try as much as you can to stop your thoughts from bouncing out of focus. Incase you find your mind wandering off, stop and start again with a refreshed purpose.
2. Read spiritual books
Get to understand your belief or rather your denomination. Read texts from the original scripts like the bible, it will help you to understand the core concepts. This kind of understanding will be the pillar to keep you strong and avoid confusion in your belief. You can also join a reading club to help you encourage each other in the journey.
3. Show up for religious services
Go to church service or mass on designated days of the week. Once in a while go to that morning devotion or a bible study. Carefully select a congregation that you actually believe in and support their course. If you are in one renewing you’re engagement is a good idea. Also attend other religious congregations, this helps widen your spiritual belief.
Meditation helps you be aware. In the world that is moving so fast with a lot of noise sometimes its hard hear the still encouraging voice of God in your head. Find a quiet place and try some focus meditation, either as a group or as an individual; just go for what works best for you.
5. Find a connection with the nature
At least once in a while go for a long solitary walk in the forest or a hike in the mountains, a trip to the desert or even a quiet rest by the river; and then listen. Take breaks to appreciate the wonderful works of God. When you are moved sing a praise song or recipe that beautiful poem, just take advantage of these moments and appreciate the Almighty. And please don’t check on that phone.
“Hand that giveth is the hand that receiveth”. One way to grow yourself is by focusing on helping others. Find something that you care about that’s beneficial and offer to help. Join a volunteering group or even start one of your own. Find time to visit the orphanages, offer to teach a class on spirituality or even join a local union that focuses on helping others.
7. Practice gratitude
Try not to let the good deeds done by others to you go unappreciated. Be thankful for those who help you and emphasize to them the impact they have to your life. Keep a journal states what you are grateful for that day and also take note of the feeling you get when you do good to others and don’t forget to appreciate them for letting you participate in changing their lives.
8. Master the art of empathy
As much as you may think that we are all humans and empathy is part of us, well, no. Empathy is an art that needs to be cultivated. In this journey try to be a sincere empathy .When someone opens up to you this time try and listen, observe how their tone changes and how their facial expressions take shifts and don’t just nod to keep them from going on with the talking understand how they feel and help how and when you can.
9. Engage in spiritual acts of creativity
Creative expression can help you get a deeper mastering of spirituality. Creativity helps understand logics that you would otherwise wouldn’t and it also brings you closer to reality of a complicated realm of spirituality. Join a choir or the church dancers and if you are the artistic type try doing spiritual works of art.
10. Spending time with spiritually established people
Well, in this journey you’ll need people to cheer you, energize you and even to hold your hand when the weight becomes a little bit heavier. Create a deep meaningful relationship with a spiritual leader, someone who you can share with your experiences and even who can offer you guidelines on how to be a better version of you.
Growing spiritually is a journey. Keep on going, make these your routine and I promise you that it gets easier and better. Good luck!
